DEAD MAN'S HOLLOW
TRAIL SAFETY

While visiting the Dead Man's Hollow nature preserve, it is every individual's responsibility and right to ensure their own safety and expect safe practice from other visitors.  Please follow the rules of the trails and use common sense.  Exercise caution at all times.  Visitors are strongly urged to take the necessary steps to prevent accidents or injuries and to act responsibly if an incident would occur.

Presented here are a few general guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to Dead Man's Hollow.

Inform Others Of Your Visit

Before visiting Dead Man's Hollow, it  is in your best interest to inform a trusted friend or family member of your plans.  This information should include the location of where you intend to park your vehicle, the trail or trails that you will be using, and the time you expect to return.  It is also a good idea to carry a cell phone with you.  Even if you don't have it turned on during your trip, it's there if you need it.

Carry Only Essentials

While it is always a good thing to be prepared for the trail, you should not pack more than you need.  Adding unnecessary weight to an already strenuous hike can cause exhaustion and overheating.  Keep in mind that if a pack is too heavy, it can easily throw you off balance.  The results could be life-threatening on a steep grade.

Wear Proper Footwear

It is extremely important to wear the proper footwear while exploring the trails of Dead Man's Hollow.  Make sure that you are hiking in a pair of shoes or boots that provide stability and comfort.  Shoes that are inadequate for outdoor activites can cause slips and falls.  An accident of this nature can be very dangerous in remote locations.

Check Weather Conditions

It is important to check local television or radio stations for the current weather forecast.  This information will allow you to prepare accordingly for any atmospheric changes that may occur during your visit.

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

The trail conditions in Dead Man's Hollow can change at any time.  It is best to play it safe and always take note of the terrain around you.  Keep an eye out for tripping hazards such as loose rocks and exposed tree roots.  Ground vegetation can hide holes and other various dangers in the landscape.  Areas around the creek beds can be very slippery even on a dry day.   Remember to 'Think before you step'.

Respect The Wildlife

Dead Man's Hollow is a nature conservation area.  Therefore, it's quite possible that visitors may encounter a few of the hollow's residents along the way.  Beware of animals in the area and never approach them.  During the warm weather months, insects can become somewhat of a nuisance as well.  Be sure to check any rocks or logs that you might rest on.  You never know what might be using it as a home.  Don't forget the insect repellant!

Avoid Hazardous Plants

It is also a good idea to learn how to identify dangerous plants before venturing into the woods. One such plant that is prevalent to the Dead Man's Hollow area is Poison Ivy.  It has three glossy almond-shaped leaves that can vary in color during the spring and summer months.  In the fall, the plant is easier to spot when its leaves turn bright red.  Touching this plant can transfer its oils to the skin which can cause an irritating rash.  Poison Oak is another plant that can be found in the area.  It is very similar to Poison Ivy in appearance and can be just as dangerous.

Stay Hydrated

Do not underestimate the amount of water your body needs while hiking in places like Dead Man's Hollow.  Staying hydrated will prevent unnecessary accidents.  Even though there are a few fresh water springs in the hollow, it is recommended that visitors drink only water from a reliable source.

Carry Out What You Carry In

A very important rule to follow when interacting with the environment is...  'Leave it as you've found it.'   Be respectful of Dead Man's Hollow as well as the other visitors by cleaning up after yourself.  Trash receptacles are available along the Youghiogheny River Trail at the entrance to the conservation area and in the parking lot of the Boston trail access.

Hunting Season

Please be advised that many local sportsmen use the nature preserve at Dead Man's Hollow during hunting season.  Where as most of these individuals are familiar with the area and tend to stay clear of the hiking trails, it is not uncommon for visitors to cross the path of someone who is hunting.  Please be respectful and exercise every precaution to ensure your personal safety as well as the safety of your pets.

The following information should serve as a guideline to protect you during your visit to the hollow.
  • Always wear bright colors such as fluorescent orange or neon yellow.  Avoid wearing white or tan colored clothing  since hunters can easily mistake them for the tail of a deer.
  • Don't forget to protect your dog by purchasing an orange safety pet vest or a bright colored collar and leash.  Safety gear for your best friend is available at most pet stores and sporting goods stores.
  • Avoid entering the woods at sunrise or sunset.  This is usually when game animals ( and hunters ) are most active.
  • Make noise!  Most game animals are quiet.  Carry a metal whistle or attach a bell to your dog's collar.  By doing so, this will let hunters know that you are not wild game.
  • Should you encounter a hunter, immediately call out to the individual indentify your location.  Do not continue until the hunter acknowledges your presence.
  • Know the hunting season schedule before entering the woods.  This information can be obtained by contacting the Pennsylvania Game Commission or at most sporting goods stores.
  • Stay on the designated hiking trails during hunting season.  Most hunters generally avoid high traffic areas or the places where they might be disturbed by another individual.
  • In the event that you are accidentally fired upon, DO NOT RUN! Immediately take cover and shout as loud as you can.  Use a cellular phone to call 911 for help.
  • Plan your outdoor activities for Sunday since hunting is not permitted on this day.  Be sure to follow the above guidelines even on Sunday.
